The semester-long course teaches the children about environmental stewardship, includes guest speakers, and culminates in first-hand field experience. When Limtiaco himself a teacher for eight years with the DOE came on board with Navigating Change three years ago, he noticed that schools were fine with implementing the classroom segment of the curriculum, but translating those lessons into tangible, outdoor experience was another story, what with transportation logistics, safety issues and knowing where to get involved.
His solution was to have the kids work on projects near their schools. A total of eight schools in Hilo, Waimea and Kona did restorative work in nearby forests. So other colonies on these islands are also very important. Limtiaco pointed out that for learning purposes, Kaena Point works perfectly as a stand-in for Papahanaumokuakea because of its literal and metaphorical link to Northwestern islands. Hi ya, folks. The 4,gallon exhibit is an unprecedented opportunity to view abundant marine life from one of the most remote areas on the planet. I get plenty of TLC, food and observation, plus a job as a marine educator in a living ecosystem.
What could be better? I am endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and found nowhere else on earth. The coloring on my face does indeed resemble a mask. The mask in females is black, and bright yellow in males. If you spot me in the tank, my hapa-coloring is a dead giveaway. Marine biologists on the NOAA research vessel Hiialakai helped with the careful and intricate process of acquiring corals and fishes from our living reef ecosystem. It is the largest single area dedicated to conservation in the United States and one of the largest in the world.
It was a tricky maneuver to store and transport coral fragments plus a variety of fishes, but we made the trip successfully and were real troupers. Coral propagation is a labor-intensive and timeintensive process, as marine biologists can tell you. But with ideal conditions in Waikiki and sunlight several hours a day, rare coral and fish species thrive. In the new exhibit, we are united with table corals that provide us food and shelter. Table corals, as the name implies, are flat rather than fingerlike formations. I like them all. Their dedication to service, safety and commitment sometimes can be overlooked.
Just as the trucking industry is competitive, the truck drivers themselves are given a chance each year to demonstrate that they are the best in their trade, that they understand what trucking truly is and can maneuver their big rigs smoothly and precisely.
Ross Sasamura. At Leeward Community College recently, the HTA Truck Driving Championships sometimes called a truck rodeo hosted dozens of participants from many different trucking companies including Y. The Truck Driving Championships consist of four phases of competition: a written exam, vehicle inspection, a road course and final interview.
To qualify for the championships, participants must have a Certified Drivers License CDL , must be approved by a supervisor, and have to be accident-free for the previous year. The written exam, taken the night before, included a variety of multiple choice questions testing drivers on their knowledge of truck driving as an industry. Driving Championships, they entered the inspection phase of the competition. All vehicles included in the competition had to have a minimum gross vehicle weight of 10, pounds.
Defects planted by the course masters included air leaks, missing lug nuts, missing truck reflectors or light bulb malfunctions. As the competitions continued it was time for the drivers to test their skills behind the wheel. The road course designed by John Nagy and Manny Ramalho both trucking veterans and journeymen was composed of a series of driver skills stations. Station problems varied from a parallel parking test to a rear stop station, a right turn maneuver, and a grease pit stoppage problem.
Scores for each skill problem were judged on a scale of 0 to 50 and were positively tallied for closeness and accuracy of spacing with each driving problem. A veteran of war, battleship USS Missouri now serves Hawaii students as a classroom for history, science, technology, engineering and math. The ship is a monument of history, as she served our country proudly through three wars. Built for speed and firepower, she made her mark as a pillar of strength and fortitude.
After continuous reconstruction and modernization overhauls, USS Missouri waged its dominance in Korea in the s as well as in its final operational mission during Operation Desert Storm. In , the Navy donated the Mighty Mo as a memorial museum. Recently, USS Missouri has taken on a new educational mission. It serves as a venue for students to mold together its architectural history with the advancements and understandings of STEM programs, which include elements of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
This USS Missouri partnership with 3D Academy has begun introducing students to 3D CAD computer-aided design programs, allowing them to gain a broader and more detailed understanding of structural and mechanical design. The latest students to be introduced to the battleship workshop were from King Intermediate. For example, students got to compare the actual gun turrets on the ship to their technological design, shown through the 3D CAD computer program. One of the main goals of the workshop is to help students understand how each portion of STEM programs works cohesively to create a functioning design, engineered for its mechanical purpose.
The 3D CAD program allows students to apply each section of the STEM program individually to the design assignments of the overall mechanics of each part. During the workshop, students had to figure out scientifically which metals would be the most appropriate in terms of mass, density and center of gravity. Mathematically, students evaluated the correct gear positioning as it relates to angles and spacing of gear placement. Relating to engineering and technology, students applied the functionality of the gear within the 3D CAD software, theorizing how and whether it would function properly.
When Parsons was appointed to his position in , one of his directives was to tie the history of the ship to different elements of learning. The Small World Harmonica Band up to 40 members from just a handful a few years ago offers seniors a creative outlet and healthful benefits, while making audiences smile. The group one of two in the Hawaii Harmonica Society meets every Tuesday morning. Most of the members range in age between 60 and 80, and all but one are retired. The band has been around since ; some members have been there since the beginning, while others are new this year.
When the band started, there were about five or six people. Now, there are nearly 40 members. Band director Robert Omura walks to the front of the room and lifts his hands, preparing to conduct. Most of them already have their instruments poised in front of their mouths. Omura waves his hands, and the group starts playing Western Melody , filling the room with the melodic twang of the harmonica.
The Reed 21 Harmonica Band will also be playing. Omura says the primary purpose of the group is recreational it provides the band members with camaraderie and a fun way to fill their newly found free time.

And the band reaches out to other seniors, too. The group has one or two gigs each week at various nursing homes and senior centers across the island. Omura also likes to find a variety of songs from around the world, which is how the band got its name. As the band starts up, they play along in sync hitting even the highest notes all together. It was that lack of prior experience, in fact, that inspired many of them to join. Keumsoon Hong, who has been with the band since Mary Webster, who has been a part of Small World for more than a decade, also wanted to learn a new skill after she retired.
She tried a variety of activities including line dancing and ukulele before finding Small World and when she finally did, she knew that was the one activity she was going to stick with. Omura says that the harmonica band is an ideal activity for retired seniors. Not only does it give retirees an enjoyable activity to participate in, but playing the harmonica is associated with a number of health benefits, including improving lung functions. Sometimes you have to hold your breath long to make certain notes and certain sounds.
And playing the harmonica certainly keeps the mind active. Fujii explains that playing the harmonica is a constant learning experience. There are always new songs, new styles and new techniques to practice. When Fujii started playing at age 74, he thought he was too old to learn something new. The kids and adults of Keiki Motocross have put a new spin on playing in the sandbox.
Originating in Europe in the s, motocross is now an international sensation for those excited by the thrill of weaving up and down steep hills and around tight turns. Motocross bikes are all-terrain vehicles with engines that vary from 50cc to more than cc cubic centimeters. A cc is the displacement of the motor size of the vehicle. As the cc increases, so will the power and speed of the motocross bike.
If your child has an interest in the fun and fast activity of motocross, Keiki Motocross is an ideal place to get them started, where kids learn most importantly how to ride safely. As parents or guardians are providing vehicles for their kids, Rhoden and his team are thrilled to teach a new rider the fundamentals of the sport. Keiki Motocross was constructed and designed as a platform for kids to come out and improve their skills as young riders. For those interested, Rhoden suggests getting kids comfortable on their motorcycles before getting onto the mini-track.
Motocross on a national stage has grown exponentially, something Rhoden compares to MMA. As the sport of motocross develops to a competitive level, the emphasis of Keiki Motocross is on having fun and teaching kids responsibility for themselves and others.

A prime example of the type of rider for whom Keiki Motocross is intended would certainly be 4-year-old Riley Gazelle. Riley, who has been riding motocross for less than a year, has adapted very quickly to the sport, spending hours each Saturday and Sunday becoming a better rider. Along with being more accommodating to youth and teenage riders, Keiki Motocross gives a majority of parents a more convenient location to bring their kids to ride each weekend, as the only other motocross track on Oahu is located at Kahuku. She finds solace in knowing that through the prestigious competition, the intricacies of hula are making their way into the minds and hearts of keiki across the state.
You really see the perpetuation of hula through these kids. The competition kicks off at 6 p. Thursday and Friday, and 1 p. As the daughter of kumu hula Aloha Dalire, Keola recalls the Keiki Hula Competition as the pivotal moment in her hula life. With this type of mentality, I was very difficult to teach. My sister Kapua ended up teaching me; I was way too much for my mother. Even at a young age, I understood the pressure and expectation of being a daughter of a kumu hula and faced the challenge head on. The hard work paid off as Dalire went on to claim the title of Miss Keiki Hula that year, and got a step up in her sibling rivalry with the accomplishment.
The process was instrumental in her becoming a kumu hula with the goal of sharing the art with multiple generations to come. Our keiki are our future. We must malama take care of them with things pono proper, moral. In addition to the multiple Oahu halau, the competition is scheduled to feature three groups from Maui, one from Kauai and two from the Big Island. The competition also will include a halau from Japan that will. Humans have been making fabrics for thousands of years, and members of a local weaving club are still doing it the old-fashioned way.
The art is still practiced as a cottage industry in some parts of the world, and though the activity might not be prevalent in first-world societies, the hands-on process of threading a loom to make cloth and items from various kinds of yarn and materials is still evolving. It could be a basket or jewelry that has a woven element. Most of our members make wearable things like scarves, shawls, or they do wall pieces that are more pictorial or conceptual. With her driving passion being art, Train tends toward the more poetic side of the weaving spectrum.
Art is her profession, and she teaches weaving at all levels, from kindergarten classes that learn on simple cardboard looms, to adult classes at the Academy Art Center, where they make use of larger, more complex looms. As for textures and patterns, the possibilities are limitless, with a myriad of loom types allowing for all kinds of creativity. Looms come in all shapes and sizes. Some are portable, some fill a large room. Putting tension on the warp enables the interweaving of horizontal or weft threads.
Steinhoff points out that more than 2, years ago, the Chinese were already making silk brocade using very complex floor looms. As for expenditure, with some creativity, door knobs or just about any stable object can be used as a cost-effective point for setting up the warp.
There are small, cheap looms, and then there are standard floor looms that cost a couple grand - and there are giant looms with a computer-programed component that are worth several times more. Thanks to one dedicated teacher, Sachie Saigusa, an ancient Japanese art form thrives in Honolulu. Sumi e simply means black ink painting. But the precise brush techniques needed to produce the ancient art are anything but simple. Rooted in centuries of Zen Buddhist teachings, Sumi e is said to reflect the clarity, simplicity and concentration of the monks who first mastered the art, while at the same time symbolizing the values of bushido - the Samurai code of conduct exhibited in feudal Japan.
Now in its ninth year, the annual show also is displaying examples of Nihonga , Japanese-style paintings featuring traditional themes and made with special inks, and Senmen , or fan painting. The teacher is year-old Sachie Saigusa, who moved to Hawaii at the age of 29 with her husband, Takamaro, a longtime Buddhist priest on Oahu and the Big Island. Saigusa was a young teacher in in Hiroshima when the hydrogen bomb exploded.
The blast ripped the roof off the school as everyone hid in the basement for protection. Over the years she would suffer through seven surgeries to repair the recurring damage. The last was a lung operation just two years ago. The humble and always-smiling teacher is more focused on her students and the joy they get from the art. The smiling octogenarian also volunteers twice a month at Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii. One of the challenges for Sumi e artists is to create a memorable piece of art using only a single color and basic, traditional themes.
But in the hands of someone like Saigusa, those limitations can have a powerful effect as the contrast of simple colors creates stirring images. Such elements can be found in any number of Japanese practices where appreciation comes from the careful control of simple elements. This can be seen in Ikebana, Japanese flower arrangement, or even in a steaming bowl of ramen, which on the surface looks simple, but in fact can take years to master the exact combination of subtle flavors.
The exhibit features approximately works of art from about 50 seniors, including those made by year-old Fujiko Motobu, who has been studying with Saigusa for 10 years. So I had to draw another one. Motobu says it takes her about 25 hours to do a painting, which is often spread over one or two weeks. She says that even after participating in the art shows since the beginning, she still finds it exciting to see her art hanging in the Hale courtyard.
Perhaps with all that work, her own personal efforts are not being featured in the gallery. This is all about the students. Remote control cars have come a long way - and fast. RC drifting provides a fun, safe hobby for thrill-seekers. Alan Yee lives a double life. Yee spends his days working at his Bishop Street office of New York Life as a means to support his young family, including his wife Jolene and month-old son Koa. But when the neatly pressed aloha shirt and notepad give way to T-shirt and remote control, Yee shifts into another gear.
As a member of Hyper Drift, Yee is an avid remote control car drifter - the activity mirrors the exciting pavement-hugging turns and rubber-burning skids found in automobile drifting, but instead uses battery-powered cars built to scale that, unlike illegal street drifting, pose no danger to their drivers or others in the area. Yee estimates spending at least 14 hours a week practicing, including two four-hour practice sessions per week, and nearly one hour per night at home in the street.
Yee plans to install a practice track in his backyard to give himself a safer arena in which to hone his skills, and one that does not present the danger of oncoming traffic. While he admits that drifting takes up a significant amount of his free time, Yee considers it a positive alternative to other less-productive activities.
You have to set goals for yourself, and the goal setting goes hand-in-hand with work. And it gives me relief from a long day on the job. In competition, two cars are on the track at a time, although not in a race for time. Each car gets the opportunity to lead for a lap and follow for a lap. While leading, the driver is tasked with taking the best line possible while the trailing car must mimic the first car, following the same line while remaining as close to the leader as possible without actually touching it.
They get to stay in the sport and stay in shape mentally while staying safe, especially because there are no legal drift tracks. This allows drivers better, more accurate control when performing precise maneuvers on the circuitous tracks. A swarm of high-speed Moths - make that a fleet - fly across Kaneohe Bay, a gossamer vision to behold. Around , the U. Thanks to advanced technology, the incredible shrinking boat is still strong enough to bear some heavy loads.
World-class sailors, with a few Olympic medals among them, arrived for the event, following the January World Championships in Australia. The boats arrive by plane or ship in a coffin-sized box. All 11 U. The world champ purportedly rides his Moth days out of the year.
When points have been tallied, the Michigan native has another boasting notch on his belt. And it turns out the first-place champ is a frequent visitor to the Islands, particularly Kauai, where his parents have a home. Born into a family of sailors, the sport came to him naturally. But even a master can face some unique challenges, like competing on an Australian lake choked with weeds or in an open-water venue in Dubai where Gulari contended with some major swells.
The physical aspect of just being quick on your feet and having perfect balance all the time is pretty important. You have to think and fly and race all at the same time.
The horn blares and the race is on, all Moths impressively perched on their stilts as they pass the start buoy. Navigation demands speed and dexterity with racers darting from kneeling to crouching to ducking under the mast, as they adjust their tackle only to battle for leverage the next second by leaning way out over the water, an extension of their wing. A few get a hearty laugh from the race crew with their show-off stance, standing on the wing nonchalantly as the boat rides high on its foils as if it requires no effort at all.
He tells you little things that get you a step ahead. Learning comes with plenty of bruises and maybe even some broken bones, but damage to the boat and hence the pocketbook hurts most. Damage happens easily, and parts are pricy. Despite any drawbacks, Liz Davies says the Moths are like heroine for junkies and the way Richard describes it, you can feel his addiction:.
The way this class developed is a bunch of people that had sailed high-performance boats in the past, this was their next thing in the high-performance category. The group travels the race circuit, picking up and dropping off competitors as it moves around the world, heading next to California. The only challenge is figuring out how to bring the sport to viewers.
Watching the action from a boat works great, and Switzerland got inventive at the European championships last year by attaching transponders to each boat so fans could track them live via Internet. A winning Hawaii bid would mean about 90 boats coming from the U. Families often accompany the sailors, so Hawaii would see quite a spike in the boating ohana.
Trying to save money on the rising cost of transportation? As anyone in the automotive industry will tell you, as the prices go up so does interest in gas-saving vehicles. Yes, the high-tech sidewalk speedster most associated with shopping mall security is slowly catching on as a green transportation alternative. Though Rice has been taking visitors and, more recently, locals on tours of Chinatown and Diamond Head since , the perception remains that the scooters are no more than a fun diversion.
The pound vehicles are a blast to ride. What first appears to be an unsteady platform quickly transforms into an easily controlled ride as it takes just a matter of minutes to master the vehicle. The scooter goes where your body tells it. Want to go straight? Lean slightly forward. To go faster just lean a little more.
To back up or stop, press down on your heels. To turn left, right or the never-gets-old degree spin, simply lean in that direction. And while the sidewalks do seem crowded, there is actually more room than you would think. Plus, the raised height of the scooter allows the rider a better view of his or her surroundings, making it safer.
Segways top out at Using the InfoKey, Rice sets the speed limit on his vehicles at 8 mph for tours, and that seems just about right for sidewalk safety. For riding in bike lanes, which also is legal, he can shut off the electronic governor to cruise at top speed. The wireless InfoKey also sets the built-in alarm.
In the event someone tries to move the scooter, an alarm will sound, the wheels lock and a message is sent to the key. Rice and his wife, the former Jeannne Datz, became Segway converts after taking a ride in California. Convinced the vehicles would be a great activity for Island visitors, the Waikiki-based couple brought the scooters to Hawaii and have become so infatuated with them that the two-wheeled vehicles are their favorite mode of transportation.
They own a car but it gathers more dust than mileage. In fact, the whole family has gotten into the spirit. Their two sons, Michael and Ryan, ride the vehicles every day to their classes at Kapiolani Community College. They even use them to whisk away their girlfriends to movies or just about anywhere else they want to go.
Currently the Segway is being used mostly by security companies, police and fire departments that have found that the vehicles enable them to navigate crowded areas inaccessible to their standard vehicles. Rice said he has had discussions with HPD, which is looking at the Segway as a replacement for the Cushman vehicles used by meter readers and other employees. With a range of up to 24 miles and cost about 21 cents for a complete recharge, the vehicle seems particularly suited to the job. But according to Consumer Reports , gas prices make up just 26 percent of the cost for car ownership while depreciation, maintenance, interest and insurance make up the remaining 74 percent.
Rice estimates there are about Segways being used on Oahu and strongly believes the numbers will increase. With operating costs on the constant rise, not to mention parking and taxes, he may be right. Imagine that, bikers who ride actual bikes. On some nights, the group can grow to include more than bicyclists of all different ages and from various bike clubs.
You may have seen them riding around the Island - a big gang of custom stretch cruiser bicycles mixed with a few other types of bikes cruising the streets of Oahu. Particularly on Thursday nights, they meet at p. And there are even families with little children riding along.
The only requirement is you need to be nice to everybody, and, of course, have a set of two wheels. The weekly four-hour ride goes to Waikiki and back with a stop at Ala Moana Center Food Court for dinner, drinks and a bathroom break. Sometimes, the ride will get changed up on the fly, with the group making impromptu detours from the usual route.
We just want to promote the riding culture. Padilla, 41, bought his first stretch cruiser bike seven years ago in San Jose. For members of Supremacy Bike Club in Kalihi, pedaling on two wheels was a way to bond with their children. But we like riding with the different bike clubs on Thursday night because of the camaraderie. I think it brings my family closer to me and my friends and their kids.
Kempo Karate, also known as American Kenpo, was developed in Hawaii and is still going strong more than 40 years later.
Hawaii, home to many martial arts styles developed in Asia, can also boast its very own style. Developed in the Islands as a cross-cultural exchange between practitioners of Ryukyuan martial arts, Chinese martial arts and Japanese martial arts - to name a few - American kenpo is also known as Kenpo or Kempo Karate.
And with each block, kick and punch, Universal Kempo Karate Schools skillfully trains both youths and adults of all ages in the art of self-defense. Both Terri and Anthony are eighth-degree black belts. The school also has trained thousands of students over the past 50 years with no plans to stop anytime soon. Each instructor is trained in the Universal Kempo Karate method, utilizing basic and advanced techniques of Chinese Kempo, Karate and Jujitsu.
With much force and dedication, Buell soon became a martial arts master, learning the Kajukenbo System, Emperado Method under professor Emperado himself. To preserve his love for Kempo Karate, Buell opened many schools under his leadership. According to Terri, Chinese Kempo Karate is a combination of self-defense and awareness of the vital areas of the human body.
Kempo teaches one to deal instantly and effectively in any harmful situation. The common house gecko is a walking pest control company that also inspires neat medical gadgets to improve human lives. I saw one in my home office, sealed it shut and never entered that room again! Sandra Brown, a psychology professor at UH-Hilo, has grown quite fond of Hemidactylus frenatus , a nocturnal, grayish lizard with big eyes and a wedge-shaped head.
I have had H. A friend also wore a pair on his ears to a costume party. The complaints are often from residents whose kids have gone off to college, leaving their bedrooms undisturbed and inviting to little pooping tenants, Allison adds. While cats enjoy playing with geckos before killing them, Brown notes that geckos also have their own set of tricks before dinner.
No worries. She once had an egg hatch in her hand, and when she placed the newborn gecko in a fruit fly bin, he caught one right away. Speaking of parenting, it takes a male and a female to reproduce H. Geckos and other lizards are the subject of decades of research as scientists try to replicate their amazing traits for human use. The pads enable the little guy to stick to walls and ceilings as it wiggles swiftly along in its search for good grinds. Researchers also have examined its ability to shed its tail as a distraction to predators. Amazingly, the dropped part continues to twitch.
Thus, scientists ask, why not see if people paralyzed by spinal cord injuries can benefit, too? Not only that, but the gecko can regenerate the lost part. A salamander, Allison says, can regenerate an entire limb! The larger, more colorful species have moved up to the high-rent district as pets. Adoring online videos by pet owners are easy to find, as are gecko toys, books, logos and jokes.
The Internet warns us that more may be on their way. National Geographic Museum opened a gecko exhibit last fall in Washington, D. If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed; if in terms of 10 years, plant trees; if in terms of years, teach the people. Today, what initially began as their Girl Scout Gold Award Project has sprouted into a tool that in years will continue teaching people about the history and beauty of our island home. We take trees for granted. When the then-sophomores first began germinating on what they wanted to do for their final Girl Scouts project, they were a bit stumped.
Per the requirements of the award, the highest attainable in Girl Scouting, they had to do something that would have a sustainable impact within the community. From there discussions led to the idea of creating a walking tour brochure that would show people exactly where these trees are and tell why they are so valuable. In nature, nothing is perfect and everything is perfect.
Before they could begin, Lim and Wong, also 17, first had to write a project proposal and send it to the Girl Scout council for approval. A few months later they got the green thumbs-up and immediately decided to tackle the most challenging part of the project first: developing a manageable route a majority of people can navigate on their own. To be classified as exceptional, Act , aka The Exceptional Tree Act, states that a tree must be a special or unusual species to Hawaii, or make a special statement with its location, historic value, size, age and aesthetic quality.
All three trees are on the downtown tour, along with the 23 found in Foster Botanical Garden and the beautiful ficus and pili nut trees in front of Washington Place, among others. The Waikiki tour is a straight path from the Indian banyan inside International Market Place to another banyan found near the archery range.
Folks can circle back up Paki Avenue to see several exceptional monkeypod trees. You will find something more in woods than in books. Trees and stones will teach you that which you can never learn from masters. Once the path was established, the students researched information about each species, including its scientific name, its origins, how it came to Hawaii and its historical significance.
They also fact-checked with arborists, cartographers and horticulturists to make sure everything was accurate. They also obtained a grant from the Kaulunani Urban and Community Forestry Program for the publication of the brochure. The year is , and the countryside runs red with blood as members of the Imagawa and Oda clans battle for land and the favor of the emperor, hoping to become the Shogun of all Japan.
One would be safe to assume that such battles have been relegated to the dustbins of history but, in fact, the fighting continues every weekend. In forests, on beaches and among the splattered walls of once-proud cities, good battles evil and bravery is rewarded with land, gold and most important, Internet bragging rights. Just such an event happened Jan. Some individuals, including 32 from the continent, gathered for the annual event that covered four acres of trees, trails, bunkers and various other hazards to test the mettle and imagination of the participants.

It was the most efficient and the players understand the game better. The scenario was posted online nine months prior to the event so people could choose their characters, and the chatter began almost immediately as past participants passed along recommendations on everything from gameplay to travel, lodging and the strange use of automatic weapons in 16th century Japan.
The biggest scenario event, in terms of space, participation, props and impact, is the annual six-day Normandy invasion scenario at D-Day Adventure Park in Wyandotte, Okla. Each year the tiny town of welcomes upward of 5, participants who storm the historic beach re-created inside the 1,acre park. Just like the real invasion, battles take place simultaneously at several locations as victory is elusive and hard on both body and mind. Veterans of the contest suggest studying up on the actual invasion for clues to how the re-created battles may play out.
It was their responsibility to run the missions thrust upon them. They have to find the right people and the right characters because some missions can only be accomplished by people with certain character cards. So they have to know who is on their teams and what character cards they have. So they need to determine what will get them the most points or the best strategical advancement.
Regardless of the size or scene, the game can be quite punishing. Bruises from the flying balls of paint are not just common but often considered badges of honor. For reasons Shelly cannot explain, regular players seem to enjoy getting shot. We had a bachelor party come in from Florida and they said they had to play church. Though the game can be rough, Shelly says paintball is a good family activity, since it offers good exercise and forces sometimes argumentative siblings to work together. The downside is that children quickly learn to outperform the parents. While established teams dominate Scenario Paintball activities, the events are open to individuals with no affiliation.
The kids are just too quick. My son has told me he can actually see the ball as it is coming at him so he can move out of the way. Island Paintball is open to everyone on weekends, and weekdays for special groups. Civilians need clearance to get on base, and can get it at island-paintball.
