Keep walking north and note across the road a small park called Bishop Lucey Park. It was also the site of a school called Christ Church and later a furniture shop. Part of the old city wall is visible just inside the gate of this tiny park, dating back most of Cork's plus years. Once part of the enclosed walls around the entire city centre were used to defend against piracy or attack, only a small excavated section of wall is visible now. This houses some of the best modern and old-fashioned foods available in Ireland.
Once again, the market does not open on a Sunday or Bank Holiday. Keep walking, and note across the road a wide avenue, called Washington Street previously called Great Georges Street , named after George Washington. UCC is a must visit when you are in Cork. The campus is beautiful. Fitzgeralds Park is also worth a stroll. It's small, but leafy and pleasant.
The River Lee runs right by the park. Have a look out for the 'Shakey Bridge' which is just outside the park gates nearest the river. You are now approaching the junction of Grand Parade and Patrick Street. A recent road excavation here revealed part of the lower structure of the original castles. Tall ships originally sailed up what is now Patrick street and docked safely in the confines of these castle walls.
You now turn right onto Patrick Street and walk East. The name 'Black and Tans' is an Irish name for them, based on the colour of their uniforms. An attack on one of their vehicles by Cork rebels led to a drunken rampage by them, in which many houses near the attack Dillon's Cross, outside the city , as well as much of the city centre were burned to the ground. This accounts for the mixed style of new and old buildings on Patrick's Street. You will pass a number of sidestreets as you make your way along the right hand side of Patricks Street, all of them good shopping streets.
There was originally a bowling green in the area of the GPO. Maylor street separates two of Corks main department shops, i. Across the road too are a number of side streets also worth investigating at another time. French Church Street, for example, named after the French Huguenots who had established themselves in Cork in the mid s after being driven out of France.
They were mainly involved in the textile industry, and this area is known as the Huguenot. There is a small graveyard on this street. Now keep walking up towards the River and St Patricks Bridge. Have a look at Patrick's Bridge. It was first opened in September of , and a toll was charged to use it until The original was destroyed by a flood in Before the bridge was constructed, citizens were ferried back and forth by boat.
Look across the bridge and beyond it you will see Patrick's Hill. Now continue your walk around the corner onto Merchants Quay. You will be following the river Lee downstream for a few minutes. Walk now as far as the bus office but do not cross the road to it. This is the main bus office in Cork. You are now on the corner of Merchants Quay and Parnell Place.
Across the river you will see the rear entrance of the Metropole Hotel, another Cork Institution. Note that Corks train station is a further 10 minute walk away from the Bus Station and is not visible from here. Walk now along Parnell Place, you are heading in a Southerly direction now away from the north channel of the river. You will shortly pass two side streets, both very close together.

Stayed in this guest house for three days and found it to be one of the best we have stayed in in Edinburgh , staff so friendly and helpful , location just great for what we needed. Would recommend it anytime. We will back again. We have arrived earlier as we taking bus from London, kind staff recommend we can enjoy breakfast at the hotel. They have different choice of breakfast and tasty. Besides, my fd was stomachache when we arrive, staff who provide tea and the most suitable breakfast to my fd proactively. She is very caring n sweet.
Moreover, there is a automatic sky window in the bedroom, and room space is large and clean, we thought we really like a queen.

We will stay here if we travel to Edinburgh again. We really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is well situated in walking distance to the best Edinburgh has to offer. Our room was surprisingly big, was clean, comfortable and was nice and quiet. We would definitely stay again! Very good stay at Queens.
Very polite staff, overall very good feel at this hotel. Room is very very spacious. Downside to this hotel includes small toilet and strong bacon smell in the room in the morning. They might need to improve their kitchen's ventilation. A great first impression. Excellent location and nice, professional welcome. My room was very good. Lovely size, decor, clean and quiet. Free wifi, good television and large comfortable bed were also very welcome.
Friendly staff throughout and was able to use hotel office to print airline boarding pass. An excellent experience at an excellently located hotel. Absolutely ideal for enjoying Edinburgh on a short break. Competitively priced too. Definitely recommended.

Staff was very helpful and accommodated our scheduling needs. Beds were of variable quality. The main issue was how many stairs we had to negotiate. I know, I know it's an historic building, but would it be too hard to add a dumbwaiter to transport luggage? Found the photos a little misleading. The room was tiny. The bed a double was also tiny. We almost fell off in the night. But it was ok cause the bright green emergency exit light that was as bright as the sun meant I could see where I was and adjust accordingly.
Staying on the bed, however, wasn't much fun either as the springs were coming through on both sides. We left after 1 night of 3. Staff weren't particularly helpful and there was 'nothing they could do'. We even saw a delivery man write a review in the review book right in front of us. This place has great reviews A romantic getaway this is not. Man up and spend more money. If you don't care where's you stay then you're probably paying too much, but I'm sure it will do.
It was OK. The breakfast was not good, since they have a very limited alternatives of food. The shower was great, but the bathroom is tiny small. Really small. And the closets are very small too. No good place to store your clothes. They are near Trams station so it is easier from airport to Queen guest house.
Breakfast is acceptable both quality and taste for including with room rate if do not want to find eating place from outside in morning. Due to it does not has reception counter so it is difficulty contacting if we would like to consult or asking for any detail. Office hour is from 8 a.
